Home residents walk down memory lane

FOCUS ON DANNEVIRKE

Dave Murdoch

“Oh the memories of dear friends who have passed just came flooding back,” said one current resident of Eileen Mary Age Care Facility after participating in its own Memory Walk last week on September 30. Over 80 pictures of past residents, volunteers and events were secured on windows along the passage looking out on the gardens of the internal court, A4 sized and two to a pane each with space to be carefully perused and considered. This was the initiative of Eileen Mary Age care manager Darlene Amboy and activities co-ordinator Rowena Opere who detected the sadness that the public Memory Walk was once again postponed by Covid. It took some research of the files and some time to print the pictures but the reward was huge — the residents were truly overwhelmed by the walk which spiked the memories and started conversations about much loved friends that went on for hours that day. The walk in the morning was followed by lunch and a happy hour in the afternoon interspersed with a singalong of one of the songs being particularly appropriate “You Will Never Grow Old — While There’s Love In Your Heart.”
