New Te Mata Figs Cafe opens
Almost a year after opening, Te Mata Figs Cafe in Napier Rd was officially opened last Wednesday and owners Helen and Murray Douglas say they are delighted with the afternoon of celebration. “We have been, and still are, blown away by the support from locals,” Murray said. “Without them we wouldn't be here.” The celebration started with a welcome by Murray, who thanked his wife Helen for all her hard work in the background. “I'm the one chattering in the cafe while Helen does all the hard work behind the scenes. It wouldn't work without her.” Murray said he was delighted with the kind words by Hastings mayor Sandra Hazlehurst during her speech. Tukituki Labour MP Anna Lorck also spoke, telling of her time as a fig grower. Napier MP Stuart Nash then officially opened the cafe by lifting a fig leaf to reveal the plaque. Then the sound of bagpipes filled the air as the new Figgery Pudding was piped into the cafe. An Ode to the Figgery Pudding was read before those attending, which included people involved in building the cafe, staff and customers.
