Low-sensory clinic offers place of calm for vaccination

Community Link

Balance will be holding vaccination clinics next week with the intention of supporting Tangata whai ora, but there is an open-door policy so anyone is welcome to get a vaccination. The first clinic was on November 23 but Clinic Two is on November 24, from 1-5pm. This low-sensory clinic will be held in the conference room at Community House, Ridgway St. Staff will focus on this being a quiet and soothing environment, using natural light only. Traffic flow will be kept as low as possible, with more opportunity for privacy and have the seating in such a way that people are not looking at each other. Staff will provide sensory tools and have staff available with calming techniques as well as serving refreshments. When people enter they will have time to adapt to the space before vaccination and will take all the time they need, with a focus on supplying easy text and visual information rather than written. People will be encouraged to have their support people, pets (some people have therapy dogs) or objects with them at all times. Transport is provided if required. People entering the clinic will be greeted by a peer support person rather than a security guard. There are incentive prizes — each person will go into the draw to win prizes such as shopping vouchers, coffee vouchers and movie tickets. Booking would be great but walk-ins will be accepted. People can get in touch if they have any questions or want to make a booking on 0800 10 25 55
